Hey all, good morning.
I was driving into work this morning and the tragedy in Florida popped in my head. I also remembered reading about a few injuries on the board and the accident at compo some time back. It got me to thinking about some of the areas that everyone launches off at and that in the case of an emergency those areas may have a delay in response time of first responders. Also the time of year, such as now, with no lifeguards on duty can be an issue as well.
From reading the posts on the board I gather everyone goes out in a group which is good to see. In the case of emergency your friends are the ones who are going to be there first. I started putting a basic first aid and rescue program together in my head. I wanted to throw it out to the board and get some feed back if any of you would be interested in taking a first aid class? I will be more than happy to put a semi formal class together. If any of you wanted to take it one step further we could incorporate a CPR certification class as well. Just throwing it out there.
Cheers,
Turk

Turk,

That is not a bad idea! (I'm up on all my certs. 1st aid/AED/CPR) perhaps hold a clinic for a small group of interested members?

Mike

With those credentials - how about we just always kite with you ?

Seriously, would be very interested in coming up to speed on how to handle emergency situations - especially how to handle massive bleeding. While the chances are very slim , I always have it in the back of mind when I'm off the NJ coast or down in Baja that you never know when something might get curious, take a bite out of you, and leave you bleeding.

I know it's pure speculation, but do you think if the guy in Florida or the life guard had put on a tourniquet - he might still be alive?

Doran

I'm interested!... Count me in!! As an ex-ski patrol (a long, long time ex) I see huge value in this and would like to re-learn some skills.

Excellent! I'll get working on it right away. I will keep you all posted on the progress. I may need a little input from you all with one of the sections but I will throw it out there when I get to that part.

DW, read your comment and to be honest with you I couldnt even begin to speculate on the condition of the patient and whether or not a tourniquet would of helped. Im sure it would of but to say it would have saved the surfers life, I dont know. I did happen to see a few more articles and a news report with the lifeguard. The lifeguard was a seaoned vet, I want to say he had 20 years experience and he himself was bitten by a shark durring his career. I couldnt even imagine what it would be like to swim out and save someone in shark infested waters and then swim a quarter of a mile towing somebody. Kudos to him for the effort.

I hear you - the guy is definitely a hero for doing what he did in rough seas with sharks all around.

A safety training like would be great!

I've been surfing and kiting for a long time now and have been thinking that I really need to learn first aid/CPR. So count me in and I'll bring a long 1 or 2 kiteboard buddy's from NY.

Btw - have you already determined where this class will be held?

Again great initiative an thanks for setting this up!

Best regards,

WOW!!! Awesome response, thank you all for being supportive. I'm shooting to have everything ready by mid/end of March. Chris has also jumped on board with the project to help me out. I have no doubt this is going to be a beneficial yet fun day. Haven't decide on location yet but my first thought is Westport FD Headquarters. Im sure my boss wont mind and I'm thinking this may be a good central location. Afterwards we can hit compo for some in water practical evolutions and some of you could rip it up and teach me a few things. Sucks to be the FNG, haha
Cheers,
Turk

It may be a good idea to post this on the NY Yahoo group as well. There may be quite a few people who don't mind traveling to Wesport for a training like this.
